Your AncestryDNA Raw Data: Download It, Then Put It to Work

Your AncestryDNA account shows ethnicity estimates and DNA matches, but the raw file behind it lists about 680,000 genetic variants. Here is how to download it, what our nutrition analysis can read in it, measured on real files, and how to keep it private.

Download your file step by step

The download is free. AncestryDNA changes its menus from time to time: if a label differs, search its help pages for "download raw data".

  1. Sign in to Ancestry, open the DNA tab, then your DNA results summary.
  2. Click Settings, at the top right of the DNA page.
  3. In the Download DNA data section, start the download, enter your password and confirm.
  4. Ancestry sends a confirmation e-mail: click the link in it, then download the .zip.
Keep the file as it is. Do not unzip it, rename it or open and save it in a spreadsheet: our reader accepts the .zip exactly as AncestryDNA delivers it.

What is inside the file

A .zip containing one tab-separated .txt file with five columns: the rs number, the chromosome, the position, then your two alleles in separate columns (for example A and G). A 0 means the chip could not read that position. Files in our sample listed about 680,000 positions.

What our analysis can read in a AncestryDNA file

We checked 25 AncestryDNA files with our reader, counting only which variants were present and keeping no personal data. The typical file (the median) contained 94 of the 118 variants our nutrition reports read, or 80%. The range was 68 to 99: older and newer chip versions read different lists.

All eight variants in the table were present in nearly every AncestryDNA file in our sample.

When a variant is missing from your file, the report says so instead of guessing.

Keep it private

Ancestry lets you delete your DNA results from the same DNA settings page. Download your raw file first if you want to keep a copy: deleting the account does not delete the copy you saved.

Wherever you use your file, keep your own copy in an encrypted folder, do not send it by e-mail and delete copies you no longer need. Our free test reads the file in your browser without sending it to us; for paid reports the file is used to build the report and then deleted, as described in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to download my AncestryDNA raw data?

Yes. AncestryDNA does not charge for the download. You only need access to your account and to the e-mail address linked to it.

How many of the report's variants does a AncestryDNA file contain?

In our sample of 25 files, the median AncestryDNA file contained 94 of the 118 variants our nutrition reports read (80%), with a range of 68 to 99 depending on the chip version.

Do I need to unzip or convert the file?

No. Upload the .zip exactly as AncestryDNA sends it. Converting it or re-saving it in a spreadsheet can damage it.

I didn't receive the Ancestry confirmation e-mail. What now?

Check your spam folder, then request the download again from the DNA settings page. The link in the e-mail expires after a while, so use it soon after it arrives.

Editorial noteFuel Your DNA sells DNA-based nutrition reports, so we have a commercial interest. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever buy one, and wherever we mention our own reports we say so. Facts are checked against the sources named in the text; provider menus and prices change, so verify them on the provider's own site.
